Alhambra
After two successful U.S. tours in 2017/18 that included performances at the Kennedy Center and the Richmond, Lowell and Montana Folk Festivals, flamenco trio Corazón de Granada returns with its second production Alhambra.
The Alhambra is one of the world’s greatest architectural treasures and a reminder of the technologically, scientifically and intellectually advanced society that existed in Al-Andalus (now Andalusia, Spain) during the Middle Ages. Perched atop the hills of the City of Granada, this fortification encloses spectacular palaces, courtyards and gardens. Within the Alhambra’s walls East meets West and the past meets the future, as the XIV century Moorish Palace of the Nasrid butts up against the XVI century palace of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. It is from this monolith that silently towers and watches over the city that the Granada-based trio takes its inspiration for this eponymous production. The language of the piece is based on a combination of the alhambrista musical movement – a XIX century neo-Arabic cultural revival – and flamenco. Both musical styles mingled together in Granada and more specifically on the Alhambra’s Calle Real, the street on which the El Polinario tavern was located. It was here that both classical musicians and flamenco artists would meet in the early XX century, inextricably linking both styles. Alhambra combines flamenco with classical Spanish music and dance to capture the essence of Granada and reveal the history and magic that still resides within the Alhambra’s walls. |
