Omar Faruk & His Ensemble
Omar Faruk Tekbilek’s music is rooted in multiple Near Eastern traditions, but has been influenced by contemporary sounds. Like Omar Faruk himself, his music symbolizes diversity-in-unity.
Omar Faruk’s sextet treats audiences to a Fusion of Sound and Spirit. The performances draw on Sufi musical traditions and time spent studying with the Mevlevi Dervishes. While Omar’s music stays true to its folkloric and Sufi roots it also draws on Arabesque, Turkish and Western influences. The music has a truly epic quality punctuated by intense emotive singing. Omar’s work transcends cultural boundaries while maintaining traditional sensibilities in a way few artists can manage. He views his approach as “cosmic” and his commitment to music runs deep. The four corners of his creativity emanate mysticism, folklore, romance and imagination. Omar is a talented multi-instrumentalist who plays the ney, baglama and zurna in addition to singing, and his ensemble of five musicians includes kanun, santour, keyboards, drums and percussion.
