Variación a tempo
Variación a tempo is a duet for guitar and dance that invites reflection on the passage of time. Dancer Sara Jimenez and guitarist Pablo Gimenez explore a dissociation between time and space, where emptiness provides the expanse in which movement blossoms.
The stunning combination of the Spanish classical and flamenco styles is comprised of a choreography without narrative but still suggestive of place and story. The emptiness is represented above all by silence that gives rise to resonance and building musical lyricism. The drawings and lighting design that dress the stage play with shadow and light to reflect the transience of time. Ultimately, Variación a tempo is the search for a fleeting moment within the elusive and mutating form of time. Variación a tempo premiered at the Roman Theater in Guadix on August 15, 2020 and was programmed by On Stage at Kingsborough in New York City as part of its online programming. It has been performed live at the Espacio Santa Clara in Seville and at Danza en la Villa in Madrid, as well as virtually for the American online broadcasting company Third Row and at the Millennium Dome at the TAC in Valladolid. One choreography from the production was filmed for the Spanish television program “Música para tus oidos” hosted by Manuel Lombo. Variación a tempo was awarded six prizes at the Madrid Spanish Dance and Flamenco Choreography Competition, including 1st Prize for a Solo Dancer and 1st Prize for a Solo Choreography. |
